Myelodysplastic syndrome

Myelodysplastic syndrome is related to the bone marrow. Bone marrow is considered to be the starting point of blood cells. Any person of any age can get this disease but it is more common in older people. Men are major sufferers from Myelodysplastic syndrome as compared to women. Actually MDS is not a form of cancer but it can lead to cancer symptoms.

If the person is affected by MDS then the body is not capable for producing productive blood cells due to which the total number of cells required by the body reduces. Tired feeling, anemia and infection are some common symptoms of MDS. Benzene is considered to be one cause for MDS and its excessive exposure will cause acute myelogenous leukemia.

The numbers of MDS cases are increasing every year with each year reporting thousands of cases. MDS will develop into leukemia only when the cells infected by leukemia undergo uncontrolled division in the bone marrow. Radiation is also considered as cause for MDS because exposure to radiation will influence bone marrow function. Blood transfusion, stem cell transplantation and chemotherapy are some treatment used for managing MDS.
