Ovarian cancer was given its name after the name of the tissues where it occurs. The three types of ovarian cancer are:
1. Germ cell tumors: Main area of development of germ cell tumors are the egg producing tissues. It is estimated that about 5% of the women suffering from ovarian cancer is due to germ cell cancer. Young girls and women of young age are the major sufferers from germ cell cancer but it can be treated effectively in the early stage of development.
2. Stromal Cancer: As the name suggests stromal cancer develops in the stromal tissues. Stromal tissues bond the two ovaries and are responsible for secretion of estrogen and progesterone hormone. Women over 50 years of age are commonly prone to such cancer but it can even affect young girls and women.
Bleeding from vagina from the menopausal women and during breast development stage in young girls. Benign and cancerous form is the two forms of stromal cancer.
3. Epithelial tumors: These tumors develop in the epithelial tissues covering the ovary. It is most common form of tumor in women. In the initial stage of development, epithelial tissues will appear normal and it cannot be distinguished as cancer cell.
